I think everybody knows Rob Zombie, either by his first(?) group "White Zombie", either by his more electro-industrial tunes with "Rob Zombie".
The guy is a horror-splatter movie fan. He seems to be a man who likes to drive everybody to the limits. That is what he is doing with this movie.
Most of the people who saw it rejected it (to be honest probably 9/10 said it was crap). I don't agree. Here's a review I FOUND and reflects my opinions...
"Most of us horror fans remember waiting years for this film's release. Most of us remember how gory and bloody it was supposed to be. Universal dropped it because of how gruesome it was, and it was actually supposed to get an NC-17 rating because of it. Well someone really overhyped there. But even though the gore level was down, it was still an okay film.
The movie starts out with a good old fashion robbery. Then it moves on to a group of kids stopping at a gas station/museum called Captain Spaulding's World of Monsters and Mayhem. The group is writing a book about off-beat roadside attractions and it seems to them that they've found a good one. They get a little tour and learn about the legend of Dr. Satan. They also learn that the tree where he was hung isn't that far away. Of course, on the way they pick up a hitchhiker named Baby. When their car breaks down she says that they can stay at her family's house. Well obviously this was a very bad idea.
The story itself is very 70's style. The whole movie is based on those old flicks from the seventies to the early eighties. It greatly resembles Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the hitchhiker and cannabalistic family. Zombie wanted to pay tribute to those old fun flicks, and now what we get is a very decent old school ride. But with all of that aside, it's time to explore this twisted and psychotic movie.
I found myself being more interested in the crazy family than the innocent kids. The family members were just so unpredictable and since the acting was great, they were very believable. Captain Spaulding had to be the greatest character in the whole damn movie. Every scene he was in he stole the show.
Next up would probably be Otis because was just so insane, Bill Mosely did a very good job, but I'll get into the acting later.
Even though I was very excited for this movie to come out, I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it that much. Well some of my theory was right, but some of it was wrong. For most of the movie it was actually pretty entertaining, but for some of the scenes I really wasn't quite sure what the hell I was watching. Other scenes were very well done however, I really enjoyed the first few scenes with Captain Spaulding's museum, very well done. Entertaining? Sometimes.
The movie doesn't really have any scares, but it does have a few moments that were very screwed up. The "fishboy" scene for example was pretty twisted and showed just how crazy this family was. Other than a few scenes like that, the movie just wasn't able to scare me, and I don't think it scared anyone else either. But I think the movie was trying to focuss more on trying to shock the audience and show them some pretty disturbing things, but it didn't do that either.
It's time to talk about what the film was missing, the blood and guts. Although films have proven that a movie doesn't need the red stuff to be scary, it was what hyped this movie up to begin with. One of the excuses was that the movie was cut so badly that all the good stuff was left out. But in the DVD there were no deleted scenes or anything, so it appeared that that whole unrated version was just a lie. In the end when we finally see Dr. Satan's lair, there were a few scenes that showed some gore, but if you blink you'll miss it for sure. This was one thing of the movie that I was really dissapointed with.
Zombie's directing in this movie was actually very good, considering it's his debut. He used so many different colors in the movie. Pretty much you name it it's in here. He uses plenty of split screens as well as heavy slow motion scenes. Although some of the scenes in the movie seemed a little unecessary, I think it was just to make the movie even stranger. One thing that seemed a little odd were the "interview" type scenes with the family. During the movie it would sometimes cut to a scene with a member of the family facing the camera and talking a little bit. I did like them, but they just seemed a little weird.
The acting for the most part was very good, but as I said earlier every scene that Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding) was in he really stole the show. He was so funny and entertaining, I think he's everyone's favorite character for the movie. Bill Mosely (Otis) did a good job, although in some scenes he could've done better but he was very good. Though the actors who played the kids were good, their characters just weren't interesting so that's why I didn't enjoy them.
So how is the DVD with this movie? A huge letdown I have to say. I went out and rented (notice I say rented) the DVD when it came out expecting behind the scenes documenteries, interviews, and a good lineup of other features. Well the documenteries and such were only two minutes long, and the other features just sucked. The trailers were nice though, but I think they really could've done a whole lot more with the DVD.
Overall, an okay movie. Zombie's directional debut was very good, and I think he'll be a very good director in the years to come."
