Nefilim - Zoon

Nefilim - Zoon

Genres: Industrial, Death Metal
Released: 1996
Label: Beggars Banquet
Full Size

Nefilim... The band that the Fields Of The Nephilim frontman Carl McCoy formed after
Fields splitted at the early '90s. The music style in this album is completely different from
what Fields Of The Nephilim did at their classics and so beloved from the fans, albums like The Nephilim and Elizium and that is propably the main reason why the fans were surprised and somehow disappointed... The truth is that Zoon is a dark masterpiece, a mixture of death metal ( Carl is a Morbid Angel fanatic as i'm aware of ), industrial and doom including many samples that gives you the sense of something unearthly. The sound is excellent. Andy Jackson got involved and to this one ( also Elizium ) although he didn't stay until the end due to obligations with Pink Floyd's The Division Bell ( 1994 ). Finaly, it is by far the best album that was released from an x - Fields Of The Nephilim, very heavy and dark and it is better to listen to it with a high quality pair of headphones, there are so many things going on in the background...

Look guys, i am a Fields Of The Nephilim and Nefilim fanatic. I didn't say that this is an industrial album. I said that it is a death metal album with industrial and doom elements. The album is indeed perfect and i think that the 4.5/5 score is fair enough.

Sacred Spirit : Not every album from Fields of the Nephilim is perfect... Dawnrazor isn't. Especially if you compare it with Nephilim and Elizium. ( Don't want to mention Burning The Fields which is an EP and Fallen which is not a "regular" release ). Also, the comment about being a metal fan does not make any sense.

Cassandra and Sacred Spirit: Your oppinion... is this a gothic album? I think it is not. If you agree ( you propably don't :P ) then we will discuss if this album
disappointed some people or not.

Anyway, comments are always welcomed! :)

The music style of Dawnrazor - The Nephilim and Elizium is completly different. How can you compare them. Each of them is perfect to what it stands for, if you like most Elizium that doesnt meen you can demote the others.

arghhhh i was planning zoon as one of my future reviews. I think there's an interesting debate here.

First of all, if we accept that Nine Inch nails is your typical "industrial" sound, then you might find some bits of samples here and there in Zoon that remind of similar effects in NIN and other (american, mostly) bands that combine heavy metal guitars, brutal vocals, and synth loops. But even that does not make Zoon an industrial album, not even an album with major industrial elements.

In addition, I think theres a whole misunderstanding of the "industrial" concept. Industrial is more than a bit voice/ noise FX and some heavy guitars in the mix. Industrial was defined as extreme exploration of electronic music and droning beats, from Suicide, from then on the english and german pioneers (I wont name them!) and of course the canadian pioneers Skinny Puppy. I think the whole fashion that NIN eventually established made a rather comic/ tragic misunderstanding of what industrial is all about- and certainly it is more than what Trent Reznor suggests (or others claim that Manson is industrial--aaaaaargfhhhh). Halber mensch is a million times more industrial and groundbreaking than any MTV-sponsored "industrial" bunch of american post-teenagers.

Aas for Zoon? I'd say its something between Formulas fatal to the flesh (the reference to Morbid Angel is successful , to my knowledge McCoy is a fan of theirs), Hell awaits (slayer riffs appear throughout Zoon's faster tracks) and random hints of the Fields' old atmosphere. It is very dark, edgy material. And there are some Fields fans that think Zoon is "too metal", whatever that means.

I think its a great album, and an interesting exploration of noisy death metal soundscapes by McCoy. I'd give it 4.5/5 and not 5 because 5 goes to very few, very selected...5 would go to Nephilim and Elizium, no doubt. An intersting personal note? I like Zoon, I like their old stuff, McCoy has never released anything that let me down or fell beneath the high standards he has set. I havent listened to Fallen yet, but this whole demo/out take thing doesnt bother me, the guys create music of incredible depth, demos or lives or studios included.

Favorite song from Zoon? Shine, by far!... then theres Xodus (headbanging hell, not suitable with spiky hair!) and of course Venus and Pazuzu.

Cassandra: theres something attractive when you get angry :PPP

Look Gothic isn't only a music type it's a philosofical theory that can be a way of life and for some it is.No I can't say that Zoon is gothic from the musical side but of course it has many inspirations from the old Nephilim.
And 4.5/5 isn't fair enough for me.5/5 is.
Every Fields/Nefilim album is special with a completely different way.You can't compare them and you shouldn't do it.
Burning the fields is special too and is perfect.
Every album, every song is a personal enlightenment.

Geez ...Nefilim is death metal ??!!! u wanna know wtf is death metal (check immolation , nile , deicide , disgorge and so on ) The nefilim are just a project of carl lot more brutal than FOTN but with the same darkness , and ideology .I m a FOTN fan since years now , and it s outraging when ignorance appear on the critical music reviews ....Also i wonder how someone who likes the Cure can unbderstand FOTN music and ideas .Zoon is fucking perfect and it s worth more than 4/5 ,all FOTN can notice that .And before judging some FOTN albums u MUST listen to all discography .Repulsive it is when someone hasn t listen to Fallen , and claims to be a FOTN fan .
this goes to darkmatter : just keep listening to Vnv nation , the cure and other bullshit and leave FOTN alone .someone who claims that none of FOTN albums is perfect , has not understood the meaning of fotn .saying that Elizium aint perfect , u deserve to stick ur ass to the crappy gothic scene and dance to crappy industrial .
Cure head : u cannot like a song cuz u headbang you idiot ,check the meaning of the songs .

i guess the most stupid thing i saw in my life is a bunch of dickheads saying that Zoon is DEATH METAL ! haha ! geez ...that would make Carl kick some asses in here ..i guess some claiming to be "gothic " people have not the iq to judge what is death metal ...just because its a little bit more brutal than the other stuff .Death metal is far a music style and type than you people cannot appreciate , listen and compare .

First of all sorry for the late response. It is a very interesting situation - that i come across very often - when someone starts crying "you are this, you are that..." without even presenting an argument just to feed the discussion. Moonblood you mentioned Nile being a typical death metal band. Did you were born at the late '90s? I am not even sure if Nile's company knew them back then... Anyway i'm not into Death Metal anymore ( and as a matter of fact i never was ) since the predominant figure/band of the genre is long gone. Go to your favourite store and buy a couple of Death's records, i would recommend Spiritual Healing and Individual Thought Patterns, listen to them carefully, read the lyrics and then propably you will realise what the "quality in extreme music" term is all about. Of course you can keep listening to nothing more than garbage ( you know Obituary etc... ). Anyway, since this is not a metal site ( thank god! ), i will leave some space for a "what is wrong with metal" discussion for a future comment. I'm sure that this thread will fire up!!! :-)
Btw, i don't remember writting something about VNV Nation, Cure etc... in this site and i never said that Elizium is not a great record ( although it is a little bit "hairy" ) and Phobia ( from the Nephilim album of course ) is an Ace Of Spades cover. :P ( <- you know it is the song from Motorhead you are headbaning while listening to it and simultaneously drinking your coffee to Dionusos Cafe - "Stay Heavy!" ). Anyway, enough! Waiting for your comments... :-)
