Loreena McKennitt. What can one say about this woman composer, lyric-writer, singer, producer, thinker, poet, dreamer! Sheʼs a unique and exceptional being. She pieces together her journeys throughout the world with idyllic pictures, sounds, personal experiences, thoughts, dreams and stories and she stamps them on her songs. Each one of her songs constitutes a unique and self-existent experience and story.
Lyrics especially personal, nostalgic, esoteric, poetic! Music uniquely esoteric, sensitive, emotional, dreamy, nostalgic, pictorial. You listen to her compositions and you lose yourself to find her again in the land of the Celts and the ancient Druids and other ancient civilizations. Thousands of different emotions overrun the heart, the mind and the soul! The listener forgets his problems and the daily routine. Magic pictures overrun the mind and transfer you somewhere else, in magic worlds far away and make you live experiences youʼve never lived before. And when you come back to reality you feel like unique!
Devoutness, elation, tranquility, nostalgia and sane sorrow and melancholy as natural human feelings overrun mind and soul.
Close your eyes, feel free
Let the music guide you
The Mysticʼs Dream: A dreamy song. It begins with Loreenaʼs precious voice and Victoria Scholars Choirʼs imposing but at the same time serene psalmodic singing. Loreena sings in a tranquil and passionate way while sheʼs being accompanied by the lovely sound of unfamiliar instruments! The Uilleann pipes enter the song the right moments to surge the whole room with emotions! Loreena sings her own esoteric lyrics in a unique and absolutely vivid way and it feels like sheʼs somewhere else, at the place where she was inspired.
The Bonny Swans: The acoustic guitar chords are in tune with the melodic electric guitar solos at the beginning of the song. Loreena interprets beautifully the traditional lyrics based on a folklore tale of a girl that returned to life as a swan (after her jealous sister drowned her) and then turned into a harp. The song continues and ends with soft percussion, guitar chords and some melodic electric guitar solos whenever they are needed, while Loreena continues singing exceptionally and showing her vocal abilities which are enormous.
The Dark Night of the Soul: The romantic and at the same time nostalgically melancholic sound of the violin to the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar on the background begin this composition. Loreenaʼs voice remains vivid and uniquely expressive as always. The melancholic and nostalgic melodies in combination with McKennittʼs vocal abilities take you on a trip to somewhere else, to a place where you forget all your concerns and problems, to a place where the mind is free, to a place where when you come back to reality you feel renewed spiritually. The guitar chords, the violin melodies and the cello ideas perform an ideal dreamy atmosphere! The lyrics were written by Saint John of the cross, really poetic ones!
Oh night thou was my guide.
Oh night more loving than the rising sun.
Oh night that joined the lover.
To the beloved one.
Transforming each of them into the other.
Marrakesh night market: Loreenaʼs passionate and full of emotions voice floats over the ecstatic sound of the udu drum and the dumbek. A song based on oriental music scales. The fiddle and the guitarʼs sound is always there and perform a beautiful mystic atmosphere from the one thousand and one nightsʼ lands. Enjoy your visit to the Marrakesh Market at night, would you like my mask? Would you like my mirror?
Full Circle: The esraj (wow! A really weird name for an instrument!) begins the song. A tranquil song based on lLoreenaʼs voice. The synthesizers exist only to create atmosphere and only from the background because McKennittʼs voice is enough to perform the absolute atmosphere. Loreena sings in a peaceful and heavenly way and her voice echoes in my head. Esoteric and dreamy lyrics by the dreamer and explorer of inner peace herself.
In your heart, in your soul, did you find rest there?
In your heart, in your soul, did you find peace there?
Santiago: A traditional instrumental song arranged and adapted by McKennitt. Though there are no lyrics, Lorrena sings ecstatically to the rhythm and sound of the percussion, the balalaika and the guitar. A uniquely cheerful song full of the sounds of many instruments appropriately chosen.
Ce He Mise Le Ulaingt?
The Two Trees: An epic pipe intro begins the song. The violinʼs dreamy sound continues the song and Loreenaʼs voice harmonizes correctly with the pianoʼs tranquil sound. A mantle of melancholy veils the atmosphere, a melancholy produced by Loreenaʼs enchanting tone and the violin and the pianoʼs melodic and melancholic pieces. Lyrics written by William Butler Yeats, poetic and nostalgic harmonize totally with McKennittʼs genius music ideas.
Prosperoʼs Speech: Loreena sings Williams Shekespeareʼs precious and poetic lyrics. I think sheʼs the ideal person to interpret such esoteric and sorrowful lyrics. The songʼs music is based on the synthesizer and the organ pipesʼ tranquil and pale sound. Both instruments perform a serene atmosphere while Loreena sings in such a peaceful and emotional way. Forget about everything, just focus on the song!
This album is a grand opus dedicated to the human esotericism. Still dreaming
